Description: Interleukin-31 (IL-31) is a 24 kDa α-helical protein and a member of the IL-6 family of cytokines that is preferentially expressed by CD4+ T cells. This cytokine elicits its response by binding to a heterodimeric complex consisting of a gp130-like receptor chain and the oncostatin M receptor subunit. On target cells which include a broad range of immune and non-immune cells, IL-31 binding can induce activation of the Jak/STAT, AKT, and MAPK signaling pathways. Due to the ubiquitous expression of its receptor complex, IL-31 has numerous physiological roles that include regulating hematopoiesis and immune response. Over-expression has been linked to chronic inflammatory states such as dermatitis, pruritus, airway hypersensitivity, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Description: CD4 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on most thymocytes and the helper/inducer subpopulation of mature T lymphocytes of all mouse strains tested. CD4 has also been detected at low density on pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells, bone marrow myeloid precursors, and intrathymic lymphoid precursors. The CD4 antigen functions as a co-receptor, interacting with class II major histocompatability complex (MHC) molecules in the recognition of foreign antigens by T cells. In vivo and in vitro treatment with the GK1.5 monoclonal antibody effectively depletes CD4+ cells. GK1.5 also blocks helper T cell responses to MHC class II antigens, including cytolysis, proliferation, allogeneic B cell help, and release of lymphokines.

Description: Chicken MCAM, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell surface receptors, consists of the V-V-C2-C2-C2 Ig domains. It is a single chain glycoprotein with three mRNA splice variants. One has a short cytoplasmic tail, another has a long tail, and the third seems to lack transmembrane and cytoplasmic regions. It is highly homologous to gicerin, a molecule involved in neurite outgrowth and Wilm’s kidney tumor progression in the chicken, and to the human melanoma progression molecule MUC18. Chicken MCAM is expressed by c-kit+ hematopoietic progenitor cells in embryonic bone marrow, thymocytes, and capillary endothelial cells. MCAM-expressing cells sorted from bone marrow are enriched in progenitors capable of differentiating into T cells when transferred into the appropriate thymic microenvironment. MCAM has been proposed to be involved in cellular adhesion and homing processes.
