Tek-Select® 10% Alcoholic Formalin with Zinc includes formaldehyde, reagent alcohol, zinc salt, and glacial acetic acid and is an excellent alternative for tissue preservation and acts rapidly because it penetrates quickly.
Dehydration is fast since it can be commenced in absolute alcohol immediately after fixation. Fixation by Alcohols starts at a concentration of 50 – 60% for Ethanol. Tek-Select® 10% Alcoholic Formalin with Zinc contains 85% of Reagent Alcohol, a high concentration for compound fixatives available on the market, without any danger of zinc salt precipitation.

Acetic acid is coagulant for nucleic acids that generally does not fix proteins. It is incorporated in compound fixatives to help prevent the loss of nucleic acids and to counter the shrinkage caused by Alcohol. Acetic acid penetrates tissue very rapidly.

Zinc salts react with a range of tissue end groups including amino, carboxyl and sulphydryl, forming reversible reaction products some of which can be removed with a citrate or EDTA wash. Zinc enhances fixation and staining, particularly of nuclei, in a similar way to mercuric chloride. It has advantages in preserving immuno-reactivity when compared to formalin alone excluding the need for antigen retrieval for some epitopes. Zinc salts are far less toxic than mercury salts and disposal of zinc solutions pose no problem.
