This is used in a procedure called light guided intubation and is used when direct laryngoscopy is contraindicated or has been unsuccessful. Light guided intubation relies on the illumination of the neck tissues in order to place an endotrachael tube.

Direct visualization of the airway is not required. Environmental light must be dark or dimmed in order for light guided intubation to be successful however; therefore, there may be instances when this is not the preferred procedure.
Used with a 4.5 mm ID endotracheal tube or larger and should not be used on a pediatric patient.
