Chloramphenicol is a synthetic antibiotic, which was first isolated from strains of Streptomyces venezuelae

Antimicrobial Spectrum: This is a broad spectrum antibiotic against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and is used mainly for ophthalmic and veterinary purposes.
Mode of Action: Inhibits translation on the 50S ribosomal subunit at the peptidyltransferase step (elongation inhibition). It is bacteriostatic. Mode of Resistance: Acetylation by chloramphenicol acetyltransferase.
Soluble in Methanol (50 mg/mL - Clear, Pale Yellow Solution), Butanol, Ethyl Acetate, Acetone, Ethanol, Propylene Glycol; Slightly Soluble in Water, Ether; Insoluble in Benzene, Petroleum Ether, Vegetable Oils
