  • pH: 8 - 10 (1% aqeuous solution)

Ampicillin is a β-lactam antibiotic with an amino group attached to the penicillin structure

Ampicillin is inactivated by beta-lactamases and acts against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, it has a similar mode of action as chloramphenicol and tetracyclines.

It inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis in E. coli (peptidoglycan cross-linking) by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. It is bactericidal only to growing Escherichia coli. It is resisted by the cleavage of β-lactam ring of ampicillin by β-lactamase.
