(6R)-5,6,7,8-Tetrahydro-L-biopterin dihydrochloride

(6R)-5,6,7,8-Tetrahydro-L-biopterin Dihydrochloride is necessary in vivo for the conversion of phenylalanine to tyrosine and for the production of the hormone epinephrine and of the monoamine neurotransmitters, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. It is also involved in apoptosis and other cellular events mediated by nitric oxide production and catalyzes the cleavage of alkylglycerol ethers.

Natural cofactor for phenylalanine hydroxylase, tyrosine hydroxylase, tryptophan hydroxylase, and nitric oxide synthetase.

Stability: (6R)-BH4 . 2HCl is hygroscopic. It reacts with oxygen especially in neutral and basic solutions, but dry, in ampules and at -20 °C or colder it can be stored for several years. Oxidized tetrahydrobiopterin solutions become yellow but are relatively stable.

Soluble in water (2.3 g completely soluble in 100 mL). A 1 mM solution in water results in a pH of 3.0 and 1 M solution in water results in a pH of 0.45.
