A cell-permeable, non-fluorescent, and hydrophobic compound, which is rapidly hydrolyzed by intracellular esterases releasing the membrane-impermeable, hydrophilic, and intensely fluorescent calcein
- Off-White Solid
Calcein is better retained by viable cells than fluorescein, carboxyfluorescein, or BCECF, and its fluorescence is brighter in a variety of mammalian cell types. Useful for assessing adhesion, cell viability, chemotaxis, and multidrug resistance (MDR).
Can also be used for imaging mitochondrial permeability pore transition.
